I gots my muse back (sorta) Read and enjoy. *Bows and stepps away*
The dim store light shined causally over the cages. It slowly flicked... On... then off again, making only a little beep each time. I looked around and the ferrets seemed fascinated, while the hamsters dozed off in their cage.
I soon became bored of watching other animals sleep, so I laid down and rested my head on my paws. I closed my eyes and let sleep have me.
When a awoke, the other dogs were rough housing. I padded off to the other corner of the cage and sat down. I really wasn’t in the mood to fight right now. As if I ever was. That day passed quickly, just like any other day.
But something weird happened. I woke up and looked around, everything was silent... still. It seem as if only I was awake. I went to the cage door and scratched at it. But unlike other attempts to open it, today was different. It flew open, without effort. I quickly jumped out without hesitation, I couldn’t wait to leave this place... Hopefully for good. I started to walk towards the door, but I started to hear noises... Every time I took a step, I heard a click coming from behind me. Fed up with this, I turned around.
To my surprise, a medium sized ferret stood behind me. He looked a bit scared, with didn’t match well with his rough appearance. “Dude.. Man,” he stuttered. “I didn’t mean to cause any trouble... I just want outta this joint man.”
I just stared at him. “Um, if you say so.”
“Anyways... My name’s Fox. Nice to meet you.”
“Fox? The ferret?” I was just a bit confused...
“Haha, yeah, the other ferrets came up with the name, and it sorta stuck.”
I laughed. “ Sure Fox. My name’s Braid..”
He looked around. “Nice. But we’ve better get going, Before the other animals wake up.”
I agreed, and we started to walk away together. He was a lot faster than me, so I had to jog to keep up. When we reached the door, he stepped in front of me. “I got this.”
He examined every inch of the door, and after a few seconds, he grinned. Without warning he ran towards the door and slipped through a hole to small for even a hamster. I just stood there, astounded and confused. How was he going to get me out? But my question was soon answered. The door swung open. I stepped out and looked up. Fox was curled around the door handle, smiling. He hopped down, looking very proud of his accomplishment and together, we walked into the darkness.
The next morning, I woke up in a small, dry field. Fox was a few inches away from me, sleeping like a new born pup. I walked over to him, and softly nudged him with my nose. “Fox,” I whispered. “Wake up.”
He slowly opened his eyes, and yawned. “I’m up, I’m up.”
“Good.” He stepped away from him. “ I’m hungry, let’s go get something to eat.”
“Sure. Sure. I know exactly where to go. Just follow me.” He walked towards the city, and I quickly followed. After all, he seemed to know exactly what he was doing. I think...
We walked until the sun was centered in the sky. The only reason we stopped is because, according to Fox, we reached our destination. But the only thing I saw was a skinny, dirty, mal nourished Cat in a dumpster.
“Hey Katy,” Fox said casually. “We need some food.”
Katy looked at Fox like he was mental. “And that’s my problem... How?”
Fox raised his tail. “You owe me.”
Katy rolled her eyes. “ You seriously need to forget about that.”
“Not as long as I can getting something out of it.” He smiled. “ Now food please quickly. We’re hungry and agitated.”
Katy frowned at him. “Pushy, Pushy, Pushy,” He dived into her domain. “One sec.” A few minutes later Katy’s head popped up. “Pink or brown.”
Fox grimaced. “Pink of course.”
“I should’ve known.” Katy dived back into the dumpster and came back up after about 5 minutes, with 2 pink donuts.
Fox smiled. ‘Thanks Katy. I don’t owe you one.” he winked.
Katy frowned. “Sure, anytime.” She threw the Donuts at us and they landed in the dirt.
“Hurry up and eat so we can go.”
I nodded and started to eat. The human food felt good in my empty belly, but it wasn’t completely satisfying. Fox ate fast, but I still finished before him.
Fox looked at me when he finished. “Okay time to go.”
“Where?” I was slightly confused.
Fox rolled his eyes. “Just leave that to me.”
I now could trust everything Fox said and did, because he led me to, possibly, the most beautiful place on earth. The grass was green. Trees were plentiful and the air was clean as can be. Fox told me that this is called a “Suburb” in human terms. But all I knew was that this was like heaven. I wanted to stay here forever.
“C’mon, we’re just passing threw. Don’t get any ideas.” Too late. I frowned and followed him.
This place was full of small dogs and pampered cats. Fox figured that a cat could get us throw here, alive.
