This view is amazing, thought Skystripes as she sat looking out across a sea of trees. The sun was just starting to rise in the east and the light danced across the pine needles. The tree tops looked to be ablaze under the golden light. Skystripes sighed in contentment. In the wee hours of the morning she had climbed the highest tree in Pine Ridge and sat on the highest branch that could support her weight, just so she could see this sight. Now as she looked out across her home territory, melancholy started to set in. Her clan mates, and the cats of the other clans, were gone. She was alone.
A pine cone snapped at the bottom on the tree causing Skystripes to look down. Near the base of Skystripes' tree, a twoleg was looking around. Wanting to get a closer look, Skystripes jumped down onto a lower branch. She jumped down two more branches before coming to a stop. If the twoleg looked up, it wouldn't be able to spot the tabby cat lurking in the trees.
On closer inspection, the she-cat noticed that the twoleg was carrying, what looked to be, a basket made out of woven grass. Opening her mouth to take in the smells around her, Skystripes could smell that the twoleg was a male, full grown. The smell coming from within the basket, was one she couldn't place. What it he doing out here? she thought.
As if he found what he was looking for, the twoleg started walking towards a clump of bushes. He bent down, took something out of the basket, placed it among the leaves, then walked away.
Skystripes tried to see what the twoleg male had hidden in the bushes, but she wouldn't be able to tell unless she got closer. Looking around, the tabby she-cat noticed a branch from a neighboring tee. Gathering power in her haunches, she launched herself from one branch to the other. Skystripes landed almost perfectly, using her claws to regain footing. She jumped down a few more branches, then looked around for the twoleg. He was about ten fox leaps away. Once she determined that he was far enough away, Skystripes jumped down another two branches. She was now about seven feet from the ground and could clearly see what the male twoleg had hid: it was a colorful, roundish object. What is that? she wondered.
"Mommy!! I found another one!" Skystripes look away from the foreign object and toward the voice. Off in the distance a twoleg kit ran towards a nearby flower patch. The kit carried a blue basket with a white, floppy-eared creature on it: it rattled when it moved. Not far behind the kit, another twoleg strolled along. Checking the scents, Skystripes confirmed that one was a full grown female and the other was a little male. Not wanting to be caught, Skystripes climbed several feet back up into the tree.
"This one has money in it!" The kit shouted
"How much?" The female asked.
"A whole quarter!" The kit jumped up and down.
"Maybe you can buy mommy a new car."
"Nah, this money is mine." The boy looked around a few moments before spotting the colorful, roundish object under the bushes. "There's another one!" He bounded out from the flower patch to the bushed. The kit was now right below Skystripes.
"This one's a chocolate egg!"
Egg. Thats what it's called, Skystripes thought, why's the kit searching for eggs?
"Mom can I eat it?" The kit looked toward the female expectantly
"Why don't you wait until after lunch?" The male twoleg came out from behind a nearby tree, causing Skystripes to jump out of her fur.
"But Dad, it's Easter! I'm suppose to eat lots of candy!" The male raised one eyebrow and the kit pouted.
"What's that over there?" The female pointed off into the distance and the kit ran in that direction. As the twolegs walked further away, Skystripes jumped down branches until she reached the forest floor. She pawed around the place that the "egg" was located at: confirming that it was gone. The she-cat then pondered what she heard. So Easter is some sort of ceremony in which twoleg kits look for colorful eggs? How strange. Twolegs are strange
